The short version

$59, one walk-in visit, results in days

The Ferritin Test ($59) measures your iron stores — the first marker to fall in deficiency, often while hemoglobin still looks normal. Order online, walk in for a morning draw, results in days. For full context, the Anemia Test ($189) adds iron, B12, folate, and CBC to the same visit.

What an iron panel measures

A full iron panel typically includes:

  • Ferritin — your iron stores. The earliest marker to fall in deficiency, often while hemoglobin is still normal.
  • Serum iron — iron currently in transit; fluctuates through the day, so it is read with the others.
  • TIBC / transferrin — the transport capacity; rises when the body is hungry for iron.
  • Transferrin saturation — serum iron divided by TIBC; low saturation with low ferritin is the classic deficiency pattern.

Deficiency before anemia

Iron deficiency progresses in stages: first ferritin falls (depleted stores), then transport iron drops, and only later does hemoglobin fall into anemia. Symptoms — fatigue, restless legs, hair shedding, craving ice, brittle nails — can appear in the earlier stages, which is why ferritin matters even with a normal CBC.

Who runs low most often

People who menstruate (especially with heavy periods), pregnant people, endurance athletes, frequent blood donors, vegetarians/vegans not tracking intake, and people with GI conditions affecting absorption. If several apply, testing is more informative than guessing.

The other direction

Iron can also run high — hemochromatosis, a common genetic condition, causes iron overload that damages organs over time. High ferritin with high saturation deserves workup, not iron supplements. This is why testing before supplementing matters in both directions.

Do not supplement iron blindly

Iron is one of the few supplements where more is genuinely dangerous for some people — and it is toxic to small children in overdose. Test first, supplement only with a clinician's guidance, and keep iron products away from kids.

Common questions

What ferritin level is considered low?

Many labs flag under 15–30 ng/mL, but clinicians often treat symptoms with ferritin under 50—particularly restless legs. Thresholds are debated; symptoms plus trend matter.

Should I fast before an iron panel?

Morning fasting draws are preferred — serum iron varies through the day and after meals. Follow the lab instructions for your specific test.

Can I just take iron if I feel tired?

Fatigue has dozens of causes, and iron overload is real. A panel costs less than months of wrong supplements — test first.

Does coffee or tea affect iron?

They inhibit absorption when consumed with iron-rich meals or supplements. Space them an hour or two apart if deficiency is a concern.
