What CRP measures
C-reactive protein (CRP) is made by the liver in response to inflammation anywhere in the body. The high-sensitivity version (hs-CRP) detects the low-grade, chronic inflammation associated with atherosclerosis — distinct from the standard CRP test used to track acute infection or flare-ups, though it is the same protein.
How results are read
For cardiovascular risk stratification, commonly cited cutoffs are: under 1.0 mg/L lower risk, 1.0–3.0 mg/L average risk, above 3.0 mg/L higher risk. These bands come from population studies and guidelines — your clinician interprets your number against your full risk profile, not in isolation.
What raises CRP besides heart risk
Almost anything inflammatory: a recent cold, a hard workout, gum disease, arthritis flares, obesity (fat tissue itself produces inflammatory signals), smoking, and even poor sleep. That is why guidelines suggest repeating an elevated hs-CRP in a couple of weeks — a single high reading during a cold means little.
What lowers it
The same things that lower cardiovascular risk generally: regular exercise, weight loss if overweight, not smoking, and statins (which lower CRP independent of cholesterol). There is no supplement with convincing evidence for specifically targeting CRP — be skeptical of products claiming to.
An elevated hs-CRP never identifies a cause. It is a prompt for a clinician to look at the whole picture — not a finding to act on alone.
Common questions
What is the difference between CRP and hs-CRP?
Same protein, different sensitivity. Standard CRP tracks obvious inflammation (infection, flares); hs-CRP detects the subtle chronic levels relevant to cardiovascular risk.
Should I fast before a CRP test?
Fasting is not required for CRP itself, though panels that include it alongside lipids may ask you to fast for the other markers.
Can exercise raise my CRP?
Yes, temporarily — intense exercise causes a short-term CRP bump. Avoid testing the day after a very hard workout if you want a resting baseline.
Does a high CRP mean I will have a heart attack?
No. It means higher statistical risk in populations, which is different from individual prediction. Most people with elevated CRP never have an event; risk tools combine it with everything else.
