Hail near home: how often severe hail hits the suburbs of 18 US metros

We counted 10 years of National Weather Service hail reports within 10 miles of 262 suburbs[1]. Here is how often hail big enough to damage a roof shows up, metro by metro and suburb by suburb.

Key findings

  • Oklahoma City leads the 18 metros in this study: its typical covered suburb had 36 days with hail 1 inch or larger reported within 10 miles in 2016–2025, about 3.6 a year. At the other end, Seattle's typical suburb had 0 (about 0.0 a year).
  • The single most hail-exposed suburb we track is Moore (Oklahoma City), with 50 severe-hail days within 10 miles over the 10 years.
  • The largest hailstone reported near any covered suburb was 5.9 inches, near Denton (Dallas–Fort Worth) on Jun 15, 2023.
  • Within a single metro, exposure varies a lot: in Oklahoma City, Moore saw 50 severe-hail days and El Reno saw 11.

Methodology

Source. NOAA's Storm Events Database, which records hail reports from trained spotters, the public, and other observers, with a location and the reported hail size[1]. We use the detail files for 2016–2025.

Where. For each covered suburb we take the Census Bureau's internal point for the city[3] and count every hail report within 10 miles of it. The suburbs are the incorporated places our site covers in each metro, chosen by population[4]. Core cities (e.g. Dallas, Fort Worth) aren't in the set.

What we count. Distinct calendar days with at least one report of hail 1 inch or larger. That's the National Weather Service's threshold for severe hail[2]. Several reports on the same day count once. The "typical suburb" figure is the median across a metro's covered suburbs, so one extreme suburb can't drive it.

What this is not. These are reports, not insurance claims or confirmed damage. Reports partly track where people live and watch: denser, busier areas log more of them, and a storm over empty fields may go unreported. A 10-mile circle is larger than most suburbs, so neighbouring suburbs share many of the same storms. Treat the numbers as a comparison of exposure, not a forecast for any one home.

Reproducing it. The figures are computed by script from our own pull of the public data, and nothing is entered by hand. Every metro's dataset is fingerprinted in the study's data file. If a metro's data wasn't available, it is left out, never estimated.
