How we vet contractors

Methodology version 2026.09-v1. Every listing names the version it was checked under.

What every listing must pass

  1. License or credential. For trades Texas licenses, an active license found on the state board's own lookup. For trades it doesn't, at least one credential we can check at its source.
  2. Reviews. A combined Google and Yelp rating of at least 4.0, weighted by review count, across at least 20 reviews. We keep each platform's rating, count and capture date, not just the combined number.
  3. Complaints. A BBB check, plus a state-board enforcement check for licensed trades. Open board actions or a pattern of unanswered complaints keep a company off the list.
  4. Insurance. Marked verified only when we saw proof. Otherwise the listing says unverified — we never assume coverage.
  5. Freshness. All checks happen in one pass, and a listing comes down if it isn't re-verified within 90 days.

Sponsored placements

A company can pay to appear first on a list, but it can't pay to be listed: sponsored companies pass the same checks, and every sponsored placement carries a "Sponsored" label right next to the company's name.
